Globally, the demand for engineers to lead the green transition and develop IT solutions, cybersecurity, defense technology, etc., is growing. Therefore, engineers have climbed to the top of the list of national interests in many countries, including Denmark.

Danish engineers are - and must be - at the forefront

Thus, it is critically important for Denmark that Aalborg University remains among the world's best engineering universities - as once again illustrated by the newly published ‘Best Global Universities 2024’ ranking from the U.S. News & World Report. This year, Aalborg University is ranked No. 2 in Europe and No. 16 globally.

Aalborg University remains at the forefront among the world's very best engineering universities, this time as No. 2 in Europe after ETH Zurich. We are, of course, proud of this.

Asian Advancement

Engineering is represented in three of the university's four faculties: the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, the Faculty of Engineering and Science, and the Faculty of Medicine, so the leading position reflects the research broadly at the university.

However, according to Dean Thomas Bak, this position is under pressure:

There is a clear trend that more and more universities from Asia are entering the top of the list. This reflects the significant investment in engineering disciplines that appears to be happening there, and it is something we should take note of. In Denmark, Europe, and the West, we need to have at least equally strong research and education environments in the engineering fields, which are crucial for, among other things, the green transition. We cannot afford to fall behind.

’Best Global Universities’ er baseret på 13 indikatorer, der måler universiteternes akademiske forskningsresultater og deres globale og regionale omdømme. Aalborg Universitet vurderes bl.a. højt med hensyn til:

  • Publikationer og citationer inden for kategorien 'Electrical and Electronic Engineering'.
  • Internationalt samarbejde vedrørende 'Materials Science'
  • Konferencer på forskningsområdet 'Energy and Fuels’.

Aalborg is a Danish leader in engineering

In the latest edition of U.S. News & World Report's ranking 'Best Global Universities,' Aalborg University is the second-best engineering university in Europe and No. 16 in the world. The ranking is the oldest international university ranking and one of the most recognized.

Aalborg University's engineering programs were also ranked 4th best in the world according to the report "The Global State of the Art in Engineering Education" from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (2018), which examines the quality of all engineering universities.

Earlier in 2024, Aalborg University was honored as the best university in the EU and 4th in the world for sustainability, partly due to engineering research. The organization THE Impact Ranking is behind the assessment based on a comparison of how universities contribute to achieving the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
